How many couples can say they met their spouse at 16 years old? Sarah Betancourt and James Abramson can! James attended Northern Valley Regioanl High School at Demarest while Sarah attended rival Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan. The pair, which originally met through mutual friends, has been in each other’s lives ever since.

“It only took roughly 10 years to get the timing just right, but it was worth the wait,” said Sarah.

James and Sarah became husband and wife on April 7.

The Proposal

(As told by Sarah)

“Nov. 21, 2016 – the proposal! It was quite honestly just a regular Tuesday at home. James and I both work full-time and I also attend school. During the semester, our schedules can be quite busy and quality time at home is truly our favorite thing to do throughout the chaos. He had come home from work while I was cooking dinner for us. I paid him no mind while he got showered and changed. Little did I know he was setting up for the proposal! Just as I was putting the finishing touches on dinner, he calls for me to come into the living room to show me ‘what the dog had done.’ I was expecting some sort of terrible mess. Instead I was greeted with roses, candles and James on one knee with our dog, Vida, next to him and a ring hanging from her collar. It was perfect.”
