Every since she was 6, which is oddly enough the age she was when she met Nick, Ashley dreamed of having her wedding in Aruba, where her family vacations every year.
After meeting Nick at a fundraiser their fathers had hosted together, six year old Ashley already had a crush on Nick – which was only further cemented when he picked her to be on his team for a game of tag at his birthday party later that year. They lost touch for quite some time, until running into each other in Hoboken and reigniting those sparks.
Fast forward to this past June, and Ashley, Nick, and 85 of their closest friends and family joined them on Eagle Beach in Aruba for a week filled with excursions, happy hours, dinners, and quality family/friend time, all culminating in Ashley’s dream wedding.
The Proposal (As told by Ashley)
We had been talking about engagement since early on in our official relationship. I joked that a water jug filled with coins was my ‘ring fund’ from just about day 1. (I think this would have probably scared off most guys – but we both knew).
I thought it was happening a bunch of different times throughout the year. At one point in the winter we decided to add another member to our family – a Doberman puppy to be a brother to the Goldendoodle Bailey I already had. Donzi our Doberman was born in February at Ramsey’s Dobie Gang – the best Doberman breeder we could ever wish for) and we would visit him almost every week until April when we were able to take him home.
As time got closer to getting Donzi, Bailey our doodle started escaping from her downstairs room to upstairs. This set off the alarm a few times-which always worried me. During this time I knew an engagement was close so every Friday on my way home from work I would fix my makeup, look pretty, had my nails done – just in case.
One particular Friday morning I did not feel up to it. I went to work a mess, had an internal meeting and got a call that our alarm was going off again – I was annoyed. I rushed home worried as usual. When I pulled into my driveway the garage door went up (oh no- the burglars are escaping right before my very eyes!). This wasn’t the case. I walked into the garage and Nick had the ‘ring fund’ water jug laying there with flowers on it. I stood still for a moment before I went inside and thought “oh my goodness – of all Fridays – I didn’t even get ready!!” I walked inside and saw Bailey who was wearing a flower collar. He had an isle set up (with our wedding song playing and candles – so romantic) and much to my surprise he had Donzi too!
Donzi was wearing a bow tie collar for the occasion. Nick got down on one knee and I could not even believe what was going on! I was in actual shock – he actually surprised me! I finally accepted the ring after the shock of our new puppy and the shock that he was able to do this all without me knowing. I was thrilled – exactly what I wanted. That was one of the happiest days of my life. I finally got to begin the process to marrying my best friend, our new puppy completed our little family (for the time – now we are expecting – almost 2 years later!) and the dreams and wishes I had made from when I was a very little girl were all becoming a reality beyond my wildest dreams. I am so grateful.
